Izuminosuke is a masseur at the bathhouse Bear Baths, located in a suburban valley of Seiran Wakoku... that is how he usually introduces himself. In reality, Izuminosuke's status and responsibilities at Bear Baths are closer to that of an owner, far more than just scrubbing backs. However, what Bear Baths is most famous for is indeed Izuminosuke's back-scrubbing skill—most first-time guests come specifically for his renowned "healing touch for body and soul." It's safe to say that Izuminosuke's large hands play an indispensable role in Bear Soup achieving its former glory.
When Izuminosuke was young, he left his hometown to make it in the city... but things didn't go as planned. Raised in a quiet countryside, he knew nothing about the rules of the urban jungle. Before long, he found himself penniless. He couldn't accept how things had ended, yet all he could do was collect his few remaining belongings and make his way back home in disgrace. Along the way, he happened to stop at a small bathhouse that would change his life forever—the Bear Baths.
At the time, Bear Baths was nothing more than an obscure hot spring tucked away in the valley. Passing by on the mountain road as he headed home, Izuminosuke was starving. When the smell of warm bean soup drifted out from the bathhouse, he couldn't help but linger at the entrance. Seeing this, the owner of Bear Baths kindly invited him inside to share a meal, and then offered him a place to stay and help out at the bathhouse. During his days at Bear Baths, Izuminosuke threw himself into every task, handling the register, cleaning, cooking, and the scrubbing service with dedication. Among all of these, his back scrub service quickly won unanimous praise from the guests.
Izuminosuke's scrubbing service isn't just about his broad, sturdy palms or his strength and technique. He always takes the time to chat with his customers. Having once hit rock bottom himself, he is especially good at understanding the feelings they shared, often responding with empathy, reassurance, or words that truly ease the heart. For regulars, the hot spring water is pleasant enough, but being able to request Izuminosuke for a close, comforting back scrub is an even bigger reason to visit. Business at Bear Baths continued to thrive, yet one day, the owner who had taken Izuminosuke in left and never returned. From that day on, Izuminosuke took on the responsibility of running Bear Baths himself, carrying it forward to this very day.
