As an owl Beastfolk, Owlbert was given priority admission to Furvale, the leading school of magic, but he chose not to accept it. Furvale is particularly interested in owl Beastfolks since they possess more magical potential than any other races. However, this type of system, which chose the winner only based on their place of origin rather than their actual performance, does not sit well with Owlbert. Owlbert was confident in his abilities and knew that he could be admitted to Furvale even without these unfair incentives, and he succeeded.

Owlbert opted for the Department of Magical Theory, a challenging and unpopular specialty that focuses on the study of the composition and reconstruction of magic, and seeks to aid in the creation of new magic. After all, most essential magic has long been discovered and widely adopted, while modern technology can be used as a substitute in fields where magic falls short. Though, Owlbert did not let this deter him. He did not want to be like the rest of his people who relied on their bloodline to get by. He wished to keep contributing to the magical world through his expertise.

The biggest challenge for Owlbert is not the entrance exam but the daily routine. Furvale only offers daytime courses, which are completely at odds with his nocturnal natuer. The majority of the other owl Beastfolks either skip school or doze off during classes, relying solely on their talent. Therefore, it goes without saying that they are free from physiological time abnormalities. However, Owlbert does not want to waste any opportunity to improve himself. Consequently, he starts leading an unrestful existence, attending school during the day and being unable to sleep at night due to his habit.

The talented Owlbert has been characterized as "somber and quiet" by Furvale's professors and pupils, but this is simply the result of sleep deprivation, which causes his eyes to become listless and his reflexes to slow down. Before he realized it, he had been living this kind of rigorous schedule for 3 years. Until he discovers a spell that lets him sleep at night, he will keep striving.
