Paul the Bear is a polar bear Beastfolk sailor assigned to non-combat tasks aboard the Proud Shark, an armed battleship. He has an easy-going and affable personality. However, he sneaks off to the ship's air-conditioned rooms or food freezers whenever he gets the chance, and only becomes slightly more diligent when sailing to cooler (or harshly cold, for others) weather.

Paul the Bear's hometown is at the Ruins in the far north. He is an essential aide to the Proud Shark on its explorations since the oceanic route to it is so dangerous that even the seasoned Capt. Locke requires his assistance to get there.
