When Souran was young, his father went missing after accidentally falling off a cliff while gathering herbs. Despite both being orphans, his fate was completely different from that of Kumoyama. His physique was exceptional from a young age, and because of this, the villagers of Kenran Village took great care of him. The village chief, in particular, raised him as his own, meticulously preparing him to become the ritual dog. He loved and respected the chief with a son's devotion. Since childhood, he's been trying to find a way to repay Kenran Village for the kindness shown in raising him.
Souran is extremely fond of fruit candies, but as Kenran Village is nestled deep in the mountains, he only has the chance to taste them during ritual festivals or when a traveling merchant visits. Because of this, he treasures every single piece of candy gifted by the villagers and is usually reluctant to eat them—only during times of tension, sadness, or on special holidays does he allow himself a small, precious taste. It was not until he grew old enough to travel on his own that he would always take a detour down the mountain to the nearest general store for a jar of fruit candies.
Under the influence of the elders in Kenran Village over the years, Souran believes that becoming a ritual dog is the most sacred honor. As he grew up, he underwent various forms of harsh training, all fueled by the hope of the day he could repay the entire village for raising him by officially becoming the ritual dog who prays for the villagers and shoulders the vital mission. This spirit and will have supported him every step of the way to this very day.
Upon coming of age, Souran fulfilled all expectations by becoming the ritual dog in Kenran Village. Even now, he still sees it as the most glorious moment of his life. However, those days did not last. When the lineage of ritual dogs is broken, the village elders turned their attention to Kumoyama—who was dismissed as a child due to his poor health but has since grown strong away from the village. Consequently, he was tasked with bringing Kumoyama back to the village to serve as the next ritual dog.
